When I hear comments like "DIRKS
doesn't have enough Canadian content", or "just because it
works for the Aussies doesn't mean it can work here", I know
that there are three reasons for anyone thinking such malarkey:
1. they have not even looked at the DIRKS methodology;
2. they do not understand what they have looked at;
3. they hear it from someone who falls into categories 1. &or
2.
Very simply, DIRKS is a process. It isn't records management. It
isn't an ISO standard. It is just a process.
Here's an example:
Take the process of changing a tire...
1. take jack from trunk,
2. jack up car,
3. remove tire,
4. secure new tire on car,
5. replace jack...
This process works for Japanese cars, European cars, American cars,
and even Canadian cars! Do you need any Canadian content to change a
tire in Canada?
DIRKS is a process. It has no content. DIRKS is a series of steps
one takes to check under all the rocks, cover all the bases, and
challenge your thinking.
Companies, government departments, any business has a function,
activities and performs transactions. Records are
generated, captured and consumed in these activities and
transactions. This holds true in Japan, European countries, the US,
and even in
Canada.
DIRKS can help you uncover an entirely new paradigm of RM. That is
the undeniable effectiveness of the methodology.
I'm a big fan of DIRKS, and I realize it might not be the ticket for
every RM initiative. However, I urge you to think for yourself, and
take a second look. It might just help you get back on the road
sometime.
